5 most important steps for bedroom cleaning
Step 1. Put clothing where it belongs
Eliminate the “floordrobe” by always putting your clothes where they belong, instead of just dropping them or throwing them over furniture in your bedroom.
Dirty clothes: If you can fit a laundry hamper in your room or closet, this makes life easier at the end of the day when it’s all too tempting to just shed your dirty clothes on the floor.
Clean clothes: Resist the temptation to leave clean laundry in a pile in your bedroom to sort out “later”. Taking an extra couple of minutes to fold, hang, and put away fresh laundry means your room will look tidier, and you’ll save yourself time during the week by knowing where everything is instead of having to rummage around in a big random pile of shirts and socks.
Step 2. Take out the trash, and remove clutter
Removing trash from your personal space is one of the easiest things you can do to keep your room tidy on a daily basis.
Simple, everyday rubbish like tissues, snack wrappers, garment tags, and receipts can build up quickly, leaving your bedroom looking messy. Keep a small wastebasket in your room that you can collect any daily trash in, and then empty once a week (or when it’s full).
Pro tip: Line your bedroom rubbish bin with a recyclable liner, and keep extra liners under this at the bottom of the bin. This makes it much faster to empty and “reset” your wastebasket for the week ahead.
When you’re looking around for trash, also keep an eye out for bits and pieces in your room that don’t belong there.
Dishes, cutlery, glasses, remote controls, toys, keys, towels, and a whole bunch of other things can easily make their way into your bedroom, increasing the cluttered feel of your personal space. Remove these items daily if possible, to keep your room neat.
Step 3. Keep your bedding clean
Your bed is the centerpiece of your room, and the place you probably spend the most time in. Ensure you make your bed every morning to give you a peaceful place to return to at the end of each day.
Even if you’re a person that doesn’t snack in bed, and you shower before bed every night, your sheets and pillowcases need to be washed at least once a week. The average human sweats around 20 ounces of liquid each night, and even more if they’re a hot sleeper or it’s summer.
This sweaty bedding can cause your room to smell musty and can prevent you from getting quality sleep. Strip your bedding as part of your weekly cleaning schedule, and wash sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers.
Pro tip: keep a clean set of bedding on hand so you can remake the bed at the same time. This saves you from waiting around for a washing and drying cycle, and ensures everything is completed in one session while you’re in “cleaning mode”.
Bedding like cushions, throw pillows, blankets and comforters should be aired out or washed monthly—or at the very least, put on your deep cleaning checklist for quarterly cleaning.
Step 4. Dust and vacuum
Once you’ve decluttered, hung up your clothing, and changed the bedding, it’s time to get rid of the dirt. Dusting every week will keep your room fresher, and reduce allergens in the air.
Begin by dusting all surfaces in your bedroom with a damp cloth. This includes bed heads, windowsills, mirrors, TV, dressers, desk, lamps, tables, and any other dust-collecting furniture.
A lot of this dust will end up on the floor, and that’s where your vacuum comes in. Start from one side of the room and vacuum across to the other side, making sure to vacuum under the bed and other furniture, and get into those hard-to-reach corners. Be sure to clean your baseboards too as they catch a lot of dust.
Step 5 - Wipe down surfaces
Once you’ve dusted and vacuumed, it’s time to get everything smelling good again. You can either use commercial multi-purpose cleaning spray or furniture polish, or you can try a gentle, natural household cleaner that you can mix up in a spray bottle. This is safe for all surfaces including plastic, wood, and metal.
You’ll need:
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
- 20 drops of pure essential oil in your favorite fragrance
Mix these items and spray this solution onto a microfiber cloth to begin cleaning. Start from one side of your bedroom and work your way across the room, methodically wiping down everything that needs to stay dust-free and germ-free.
Don’t forget things you’d usually overlook, like plant leaves, candles, picture frames, trinket boxes, light switches, door and dresser handles, and remotes.
Wipe down your windows and mirrors with a streak-free glass cleaner to finish up.
