Overall, 33.7% of the most popular artists on people’s playlists are women, and 31.7% are men. The Science Of Home Cleaning Playlists
Our analysis of the most popular songs on cleaning playlists found that the average beats-per-minute (BPM) is 121 BPM, which places the typical “home cleaning song” within the range that makes it a good choice for exercise routines, workouts, and gym classes.
This lines up with earlier research. A previous report examining the calories burned while cleaning found that a typical home clean burns 830 calories, which is the equivalent of a HIIT workout for the average person for over 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Additionally, the average person spends an estimated 34 minutes per day cleaning, or roughly four hours per week. If they’ve got music on, the typical person cleaning listens to 67 tracks per week or ten tracks per day (the average duration of the top 100 home cleaning songs is just over three and a half minutes).
The average BPM of 121 is the same as you commonly find on exercise playlists, suggesting that people are wiping, swiping and vacuuming at a workout pace.
We asked Homeaglow's cleaning expert Sara Aparacio if this was a good idea in her experience? Sara advised that a higher BPM is great for staying motivated and on task, but warned against tackling all cleaning tasks at a high pace. For tasks that require more care, like dusting fragile items or handling chemicals, Sara advises skipping to a slower track so you can focus in a calmer way. To do this, Sara suggests adding a variety of tracks to your playlist so you can jump to a suitable track whenever you need it.
Based on Sara's advice and our research of over 5,000 playlists and 1.3 million tracks, we've created the ultimate cleaning playlist. Try it for yourself on Spotify here.
Methodology:
Using third-party tools, between 12/12/2024 and 12/13/2024, we analyzed 1,299,041 tracks and 5,798 public playlists to reveal the top 100 songs within playlist titles related to the following searches: "Cleaning", "Housework", "Washing up", “Spring clean”, “Doing the dishes”, and “Cleaning motivation”.
This data provided us with the top 100 songs for each search. Combining these top songs for each search, we calculated the overall most featured songs and further analyzed them by artist, duration, and Beats-Per-Minute. We then used both scientific and third-party studies to help provide insight into why many of these songs are good for home cleaning and their links to physical exercise.
