How To Clean Oven Glass Without Harsh Chemicals
Say goodbye to baked-on grime and marks with our guide to cleaning oven glass. We explain how to clean the inside, outside, and between glass door layers.

If you’re reading this, your oven glass has probably reached a point where you can’t see what you’re cooking anymore.
Every grease splatter, spill, and accidentally burnt dinner that happens when you’re baking and roasting gets nicely contained inside your oven, which can wreak havoc on the glass window. Over time, this results in a buildup of greasy brown patches and caked-on grime that can be difficult to remove without harsh commercial chemicals.
Using chemicals is one way to clean your oven glass, but these can cause eye, skin, and lung irritations, especially in small kitchens that don’t have much ventilation.
For this reason, we’re sharing our professional tips on how to clean oven glass quickly and gently—the natural way.
If you dread the thought of cleaning oven glass (and the rest of your oven) you can always book a professional, affordable cleaner to take care of it with Homeaglow.

How to clean a glass oven door
To remove finger marks, sticky spots, and other miscellaneous cooking residues from the exterior of your oven glass, all you need is a cloth and liquid dish detergent to get the job done.
Step 1: Squirt a few drops of your favorite grease-cutting dish detergent onto a damp cloth and work your way down the glass door from the top to the bottom, paying attention to any stubborn spots as you go.
Step 2: Wipe the door down with a fresh, damp cloth to remove any soap residue. To ensure a streak-free finish, spray the glass with glass cleaner and then buff it dry with a microfiber cloth.
How to clean the inside glass of an oven
The inside of your oven glass needs a heavy-duty cleaning solution. Baking soda can help you remove tough cooking stains and grease without scratching the glass due to its natural cleaning properties.
Step 1: In a bowl, mix enough baking soda and water to form a thick paste that will be sufficient to cover all of your interior oven glass.
Step 2: Spread this paste onto the glass with a cloth, and leave it to sit for at least an hour, or overnight. This will give the baking soda time to break down the grease and fat on the window. You’ll notice the baking soda paste getting darker as it sits. This means it’s doing its job absorbing the dirt on the glass.
Step 3: Gently remove the paste with a non-abrasive scrubbing pad or damp cloth, then rinse the glass down with water and a fresh cloth, and buff it dry with a clean microfiber cloth.
Step 4: If the inside oven glass still looks streaky once you’re finished, use a few drops of grease-cutting dish soap on a damp rag to wipe down the window again. Rinse the glass with another damp cloth, and then dry it off.
Tip: Baking soda and vinegar is great for cleaning all kinds of things, from cleaning sink drains to cleaning a microwave.
How to clean between oven glass without disassembling the door
Not many people know this, but you can clean in between the two layers of your glass oven door. Even better, you don’t usually need to take the door apart to do it.
If you’ve cleaned the inside and outside of your oven glass and it still looks dirty, the problem might lie in between the layers of glass.
This method looks a little tricky, but is pretty quick and easy.
Most oven doors have narrow holes that are located on the underside of the door (the edge of the door where the hinges are). If you can’t find these access holes on your oven door, consult your oven’s user manual (or Google the make and model of your oven) to locate them.
Step 1: Take a wire coat hanger and unbend it until you have a straight piece of wire.
Step 2: Wrap some paper towels around one end of the wire, and secure it very firmly with rubber bands. This will ensure the paper towels don’t fall off while you’re cleaning and get stuck inside your oven window.
Step 3: Make up a mix of one part white vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle. Spray this onto the paper towels, and insert this end of your wire through one of the access holes in the bottom of your oven door.
Step 4: Gently begin moving the wire around in between the glass layers of your oven window to remove any streaks and dirt.
Step 5: Once your door looks clean, you can repeat this process using dry paper towels to shine and dry the glass.
How to clean toaster oven glass
Removing grease from your toaster oven’s glass door is much the same as cleaning a regular oven door.
Step 1: Mix up a paste of baking soda and water, then spread it onto the inside glass of the toaster oven with a cloth. Leave the paste to sit for an hour, or overnight.
Step 2: Wipe the glass down with a wet cloth or non-abrasive scrubbing pad until all the grease and dirt has gone.
Step 3: If there are stubborn grime spots, you can either repeat the baking soda treatment, or wet a cloth with some white vinegar or grease-cutting dish soap and spot-clean these problem areas.
How to clean your oven’s glass door without baking soda
Baking soda is our go-to cleaner for shiny oven glass. But if you don’t have any baking soda handy, you can try these alternative methods instead:
- Magic eraser - use a damp magic eraser to remove stubborn patches of grime on your oven glass
- White vinegar - mix one part water with one part vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the oven glass, and then wipe the grime away with a non-abrasive scrub sponge or cloth. Repeat until your oven door is thoroughly clean.
- Vinegar and dish soap - in a spray bottle, mix one part white vinegar and one part grease-cutting liquid dish soap. Spray the oven glass liberally with this solution, then wipe down the glass with a damp cloth. Repeat until the glass is fresh and clean.
Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your oven glass window spotless
Once you’ve given your oven glass a deep clean, it’s best if you keep up a regular maintenance schedule. This will mean there’s less chance for baked-on grime to set in, and it will take less time for you to scrub any new splatters away.
We recommend that you clean your oven door glass on the inside every couple of months, or as soon as a spill happens. If you regularly roast meat or other high-fat foods, you might want to wipe your oven glass down more frequently.
Clean between the layers of your oven glass every six months, and give your exterior oven glass a good wipe-down every week along with your other house-cleaning chores.
